If you grew up in the Adventist culture, you will remember that it was often drummed into us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and the meal that should be most nutrient dense and calorically high.
Since those days of simplistic sayings, Science has made a few adjustments. While it is still important to eat properly, most of us don't have the same urgency around the old rules. BUT, we do know that oatmeal is a high nutrient food-- provides us with manganese, protein, and other minerals and vitamins.
At our house, a bowl of oat porridge does start the day-- with cherries or blueberries, a dollop of maple syrup, soy milk, and maybe some pecans or a teaspoon of peanut butter. Here are some other old timey, and still healthy, breakfast suggestions you can find on the VeggieSchool site:
Bran-Apple-Raisin Muffins - made with bran flakes, apple and raisins
Carob-Peanut Butter Muffins- made with roasted carob powder, quick oats, peanut butter, flour.
Company Porridge- so called because it is baked. Cake for brekky anyone?
Corn Meal Pancakes- for breakfast or like chapatis with a great veggie stew
Cranberry-Orange Bread by Darlene Blaney, PhD Nutritionist
Cracked Wheat or Stone-Milled Bread
French Toast (with a coating of cashew, orange juice, and date)
Millet Breakfast (porridge with additions)

Apple Duff Dessert (Suggestions for Gluten-Free and Vegan Subs)
Mary Lou Johnson is our Church's star dessert-maker. Here is the picture of a torn-apart Apple Duff she made for a recent Fellowship Dinner... yes, it was delicious! As the Irish baker in the video (following) states, the apple duff is "not the prettiest dessert in the world" but delicious, nonetheless. I've taken the recipe in the video and made it both gluten-free and vegan, and somewhat less sucrose-sweet (by using lower-glycemic-indexed Coconut Sugar vs. regular brown sugar). GLUTEN-FREE and VEGAN PIE CRUST: 1 1/2 C. Gluten-free All-purpose Flour (Bob's Red Mill or Pamela's or other) 1/2 tsp. Salt 1/2 C. Organic Coconut Oil, cold, not melted 4 - 6 T. Almond Milk Combine the flour, salt and coconut oil in a bowl and use a pastry blender to cut the mix until it looks like coarse meal Sprinkle on the Almond Milk and mix together with a fork until it is combined and moist Press or roll into a rectangle between two pieces of wax paper. ...
Blueberry-Hibiscus Latte
A blueberry hibiscus latte, sweetened with maple syrup, offers a creamy, caffeine-free burst of summer. Perfect for cozy chats or solo sips! Here is another tasty hot drink that doesn't keep you awake at night with a caffeine surge. The blueberry flavor reminds me of my BFF Linda because we went through a period of drinking blueberry tea when we met for our little world-fixing chats back in the day! I actually have quite a few blueberries in my freezer, so this is something I can enjoy often. I guess you could also make this latte using both hibiscus and blueberry tea, but I think most blueberry tea powders have something in them to amp up the flavor and you are probably better off using something more natural. But you get to decide! Ingredients: (about 2 servings) *1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries or 2 tablespoons dried blueberries 💚 *1 tablespoon hibiscus tea or dried hibiscus flowers 💚 *1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or agave (to taste) *1/2 cup coconut or almond milk (for ...

Hot Carob Drink
Mmmm hot carob! Have you tried it? If not, you might be surprised to know that it is a creamy, dreamy sweet drink-- like cocoa, but creamier and without the bitterness. And without caffeine. And without theobromine. And, as I discovered, it helps to settle a wonky tummy (otherwise known as 'diarrhea'). Without creating the reverse 'issues' (i.e., constipation). Or, that is what it did in this household. I am not a medical practitioner, just someone looking for a possible help for a problem and finding many indications that a hot carob drink can 'do the trick'. See this article in Healthline , for example. Please check it out with your own health provider. I have baked with carob powder (muffins, cakes, cookies, bliss balls) and carob chips, but hadn't checked out the hot drink. I like it better than cocoa (hot chocolate). THE SIMPLE RECIPE FOR 1 CUP OF HOT CAROB DRINK: For one mug of hot carob: Slowly heat a cup of non-dairy milk on the stove until it ...
